It goes without saying that we’re all a bit paranoid about getting sick these days. If someone in our house coughs, then we sound the alarm. I guess this is just what happens during a global health crisis! Ironically, we can take some lessons from this situation. Before coronavirus, were you as hygienic as you could’ve been? Did you go to great lengths to keep your kids healthy and prevent sickness in your home? Most of the time, if someone fell ill, we’d just act like it was unavoidable. Oh, it’s the flu season, this is to be expected. Or, oh there’s a bug going around, my child was bound to catch it.
In reality, there are hardly any sicknesses that can’t be prevented. So, let’s learn from our time in lockdown and prevent your family from getting sick. Here are some simple steps you should take:

Teach your children to clean their hands
Obviously, since the coronavirus outbreak, there’s been a lot of focus on handwashing. It’s very bizarre that we’re in the year 2020 and most of the world needed to be taught how to wash your hands correctly! Needless to say, you have to teach your kids to do this and to carry on doing it post-coronavirus. Get them into the habit of washing before meals and when they come in from the outside. Also, try to bring a hand sanitizer with you whenever you go out. This replaces handwashing when there’s no soap or water nearby. Obviously, both of these things will kill germs and prevent your child from a) catching things, and b) spreading germs!
Filter your water
Drinking water directly from the faucet is usually fine. Most people do it without thinking, and it certainly beats buying bottled water. However, while it is safe to drink, there can still be things in the water that cause harm. Many children might get sick through ingesting bacteria or hard metals. Much depends on the water quality in your area. As such, you should use something like a Berkey filter to clean up your water. This will remove any potentially harmful things from it, making the water much safer to drink. Therefore, you can prevent lots of bugs or infections from occurring in your home.

Wipe down surfaces
Lastly, be more pragmatic with your home cleaning efforts. Try to wipe down surfaces as regularly as possible, using some sort of antiviral/antibacterial wipe or spray. Again, this kills germs, which stops them from jumping on your family and infecting everyone. It’s particularly important if one person in your family is sick. This way, it prevents their germs from spreading on to surfaces and being picked up by other family members. You don’t have to go crazy, but maybe wipe your kitchen surfaces as you’re tidying up after meals – simple!
With these simple tips, you can help prevent sickness and disease in your home. Yes, they help against the coronavirus battle right now. But, they should also be used beyond this to keep your family healthy at all times.
