One of our favorite things in our homeschool is audio books. We love to learn from literature and living books, but sometimes it gets tough on Mama’s voice. We also have some struggling readers, so you can see why audio books really are a blessing for us.
Last year, we studied in-depth about the Pilgrims. We spent months reading various books, doing activities and using other resources. One of our favorite things was listening to Margaret Pumphries’ Stories of the Pilgrims. I had downloaded the audio from Jim Hodges Audio Books.
It is a captivating story, covering the whole of the pilgrim’s journey — including their time in Holland. Our time listening was our favorite part of the study. The chapters are fairly short (except our favorite one – Two Little Captives at 23+ minutes and a lot of action) so it was easy to listen to as much as we had time for on any given day. We have begun listening to it again – as part of our Thanksgiving traditions during the month of November.

The study guide comes to as a 31 page pdf file. It includes vocabulary, comprehension and thinking questions divided amongst 11 assignments. The last section of each assignment is activities. Most of these are fun, hands-on activities that my children love, some of them were extensions of the vocabulary work. The activities appeal to a range of ages and abilities – some were great for my older daughter while others were a better fit for my younger learners. Each assignment begins with the chapter titles so you can be sure to coordinate your listening. There is also an answer section at the end. The very last page is a listing (with definitions) of character qualities. The study guide is very flexible to how you want to use it.
