We usually watch movies as a family – family movie nights on Fridays are a long-standing tradition. We waited for the perfect night to settle in and watch Princess Cut from Watchman Pictures together. My husband was very reluctant — this is a far cry from his usual pick of historical or kung-fu film (even better if it is both in one). We did not get a movie of any kind in for weeks. Not wanting to keep waiting for a Friday, we went ahead and watched without Dad. I didn’t make the boys stick around (but I didn’t send them out of the room either). The girls and I gathered some (keto) snacks and popped in the DVD on a weekday afternoon.

We had seen previews, we thought we knew what to expect. There would be romance, perhaps a broken heart, then real love with the “right guy”. Well, this wasn’t too far from the truth, but all the rest of the story and how the relationship with the “right guy” came about were not what most of us were expecting. Three of our daughters are teenagers and all three had different thoughts towards the scenarios that came up throughout the movie. I had intended to just watch and be entertained (at least the first time). But as usual, the girls did not comply with my unspoken plan.
Apparently, our daughters have strong opinions and cannot keep them to themselves as we watched. One daughter pointed out right away where Grace went wrong. She was quick to share how she would have handled things differently. Then another sister pipes up that she cannot know that. If you are so focused on the result you are hoping for, you are not really seeing the “writing on the wall”. She wouldn’t have been surprised and broken-hearted. As the girls bantered back and forth, I could see that they really have thought about this. The conversations and words of their wise-old parents and grandparents hadn’t fallen on deaf ears. As the story progresses and Grace meets with someone outside of her family to counsel her on her feelings, they were quick to notice the bad advice. Not just notice but join in with Grace at the incredulous reaction (silently I cheered their reactions).
Of course Grace does meet a new guy. Not only did we get to watch the friendship turn to more, under her father’s guidance, but we saw other relationships in Grace’s life improve. The older girls could relate quite well to having two younger brothers. Grace’s relationship with her youngest brother reminds me of our eldest daughter and youngest son’s. In the course of the movie, there was an incident that could have turned out badly as well as some sweet moments where the relationship was repaired. Speaking of those brothers, they did not stay out of the room. They watched the entire movie with us (and it wasn’t just the snacks they were after). They may have protested that it was a girly romance movie (think “kissing book” from Princess Bride) but they enjoyed it just as much as the rest of us did.
The movie was not all serious-ness. There were some scenes that were outright silly and funny. If you enjoyed those then don’t miss the deleted scenes. I’m glad we have this on DVD to watch again and again. See what other Crew families had to say, click the image below to read their reviews.
