Of course you have!! We are pretty isolated from most media and current events but my children have been asking various questions with increasing frequency. We are nearly finished with our current 6 week cycle for school work. We will be including some fun activities and studies about the Olympics.
The time is drawing near for the opening ceremonies – and the end of CurrClick’s sale and “torch hunt” for freebies. Check it out here. Really, hurry to this one right now! It is only supposed to be up through the opening ceremonies. That is only a few short hours away. If you need some hints for finding all the torches for the freebies, check out the Facebook page for CurrClick. That’s how I found the ones I couldn’t spy out on my own. It’s not cheating, it’s helping each other!
There are so many studies out there! I have downloaded files from the Schoolhouse Teacher’s site. This has been an ongoing study (currently on Day 5, not sure how many days there will be–hopefully through the whole Olympics!)
Knowledge Quest has some free files for Facebook fans (in their latest newsletter you can find out how to get it if you’re not on Facebook). What better time to sneak in some geography than during the Olympics. We often see teams from countries that we don’t often encounter at other times. It’s also a great time to review or become familiar with flags of the countries as well.
Even the folks at What’s In the Bible? have a pack of printable fun put together.
In our home, any excuse for special food is welcomed. I don’t have specific themes or days lined up (we are taking a very relaxed approach–whatever strikes our fancy) but there are tons of great ideas and recipes out there. From torch cupcakes to gold medal cookies to meals from various countries you can do as much or as little as you want. Allrecipes.com is a great place to start.
To read and see more on the Olympics from the network that has the TV coverage, check out http://www.nbcolympics.com I am hoping to be able to see highlights (at least!) of various events.
As I was writing this, I saw that Homeschool Creations has a post sharing about Olympic studies as well. Be sure to check that out. A few are not on my list — off to download!
Enjoy!
