Starting this Monday (May 14th) many members of the TOS Crew will be blogging daily about various topics. We were able to choose our own topic to focus on. The topics are just as varied as our members are. There will be something to interest everyone. I know I’ll be reading quite a few, too!
Though written by homeschoolers, not all the posts will be strictly related to homeschooling. Some of the themes are “Living out of my Pantry”, “Freezer Cooking”, “Sewing a Skirt”, “Farm Babies”, “Summer Science” and “Educating with Games”. Those are just the ones I hope to read each day. There are so many others, I figure I’ll be reading for a few weeks to read them all.
My topic for the week is “Five Days of Eating Around the World”. Baking and cooking is something I enjoy (as well as sampling those creations) and geography is my favorite subject to learn about. It is only natural that I blog about how I combine these two loves of mine.
I have been blessed to make goodies to share with the children of our church as part of the monthly mission focus. The children learn about a country (or region) and missionaries or the work of missions in that area. The segment is one of the favorites of both the children and the helpers. I love seeing when the children really enjoy something they think they wouldn’t like.
It is fun learning with my children as we research and make different recipes. Sometimes we learn about the ingredients featured in the recipe, sometimes about the life of the person sharing the recipe. We marvel at how some things from half the world away are so similar to some of our own favorite treats. We also pray for the people we learn about. One thing we have learned, we are so blessed in this country.
This quote is from one of the blogs I discovered in my travels throughout the internet searching for great recipes. “Literature is a bit like food in this way. Novels about Afghanistan and Afghan people are a little window into their universe; it’s another way to bridge the enormous divide of geography, religion, politics and so on.” – Katie from Afghan Culture Unveiled.
