Here’s What To Do If Your Child Is Struggling At School Work

Have you noticed that your child is struggling at school? This could be in a certain subject or it might be in a variety of different areas. If this is the case, then you need to make sure that you are doing what you can to help them. There are a few options that you should consider.

Headphones are a great help for struggling learners. They can be used to combat distractions or for audiobooks if there are reading struggles.

Try A Different Learning Method

One of the problems with the traditional learning model is that it is based on the concept that all children can and will learn in the same way. The reality is that they can’t and they won’t. Learning is rather unique and some people are better suited to different methods. For instance, you might find that your child is great at absorbing information through reading. However, another child could be far better at gaining and remembering info through audio support. That’s why you might want to try an audiobook for kids if your child is struggling to remember the information they need for exams.

Look For Distractions

If a child is struggling in school, it’s often the case that they are distracted by something. It could be younger or older siblings who are doing something fun and the struggling child wants to join in (FOMO – fear of missing out).  You might be able to use this as a motivator to begin work earlier so that they can join in.  Or the distracting siblings could move their activities elsewhere. The distractions could be beyond your control to move away from the learner.  One of the things we have done to help a struggling learner “tune things out” is to use headphones (noise-canceling work best but aren’t always essential).  We’ve all seen (or been guilty of) daydreamers, staring out the window.  Perhaps it is a bird or other wildlife or just the draw of good weather that is holding their attention.  Simply turning their study space to have the window at their back will help.  All of these options are possibilities. You should explore the learning environment and find out if this is the issue.

Is It Sensory?

It’s possible that your child is struggling with school because they are being impacted by a sensory issue. This is quite common in young children because they often won’t understand what is causing their issue so they won’t be able to tell you. For instance, a young child might not know that they need glasses if they can’t see the board or if they are getting headaches reading. That’s why you should make sure that you get them tested regularly for issues like this. It’s best to do what you can to ensure that you catch an issue like this early.

Provide Extra Support

Finally, you should make sure that you are trying to give them the extra support that they need. This could come in the form of homeschooling or after-schooling. Alternatively, you might want to arrange a tutor to help them in the area where they are struggling. Remember, your child isn’t going to excel in every subject. They are always going to have areas where they are stronger and weaker. They might need additional support in certain areas.

We hope this helps you understand some of the steps that you can take if your child is struggling in school. The aim here should always be to make sure that they are getting the right support that they need.
