As you may have noticed I have a thing for Amish fiction. I enjoy reading as an “escape” or “me” time, but don’t want to feel the time is wasted. I look for something I can learn something from or feel encouraged by. The simple lives of Plain people does both for me.
I also love a good mystery or suspense story. When I read the description for Inescapable by Nancy Mehl, I was intrigued. This book has both!
Lizzie Engel is used to running away. At eighteen, she left her Mennonite hometown, Kingdom, Kansas, with plans never to return.
But five years later, the new life she built is falling apart. Lizzie knows she’s being followed, and she’s certain the same mysterious stranger is behind the threatening letters she’s received. Realizing she’ll have to run again, the only escape Lizzie can manage is a return to the last place she wants to go.
Once she arrives in Kingdom, Lizzie is confident she’ll be safe until she comes up with a new plan. In reacquainting herself with the town and its people–especially her old friend, Noah Housler–she wonders if she judged her hometown and her Mennonite faith too harshly. However, just as she begins to come to terms with her roots, Lizzie is horrified to discover the danger she ran from is closer than ever.
No longer sure who to trust and fearful for her life and the lives of those around her, Lizzie finds she has only one place left to run–to the Father whose love is inescapable.
I have read a bit about Mennonites, know of some churches in our area, but have always had the impression they are not as strict as Amish. Reading about the community in Kingdom reminds me that you cannot always lump people together. My ideas of Mennonites (based on impressions and 3rd hand information at best) may be completely off base. You know, the age-old admonishment to “not assume”. Now I want to know more!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I had a hard time putting it down and read it quickly. I do not like romance novels. My husband laughs at me everytime I say that. A lot of what have been reading lately could be considered romance – but that is not why I am reading it. (Am I protesting too much? Do I just not realize that I am a fan?) For this book, Inescapable, I think of this as suspense first. The romance in the storyline is secondary. This is Book One in the Road to Kingdom series. Maybe the next book will pursue more romance, who knows? I do know that I cannot wait to read it!
