We’re going to go over all the things you should know about a nursing career and what you can expect if you choose to make it a reality. It is never possible to have too much information at your disposal when making a career change such as this. Read on now to find out more.

Compassion and Patience

There are some personality traits and attributes that can really help you succeed in nursing. If you are someone who is patient and compassionate with other people, this will definitely be a good starting point. It is difficult to succeed in the day to day struggles of being a nurse if you don’t have any patience or you struggle to treat others with compassion. It is best to know that now than to find it out later.

New Challenges Each Day

There are new challenges ahead of you every day of the week when you are working as a nurse. No day is the same as the one that follows it. Not to say that this is a bad thing because many people love that kind of variety in their working lives. However, some people can find this quite challenging and even stressful. If you are someone who can’t deal with that kind of thing, a career in nursing is probably not the one for you.

Understand How to Qualify as a Nurse

Of course, before you start working as a nurse, you need to qualify and graduate from a relevant course, such as the ones offered at Regis College and other institutions. Make sure you understand the training and qualifying procedures before you decide whether this is the career path for you. Qualifying as a nurse isn’t easy but it’s what you need to be prepared to do if you are serious about working in this field.  There are different licenses and specialties, so look at all of the schooling and training needed.

Are You Scared of Blood?

This might sound like a stupid question but if you are someone who doesn’t deal with the sight of blood well, you are probably going to struggle when working as a nurse. Like it or not, when working as a nurse, you are going to see and be dealing with blood quite a bit.  There will likely be plenty of other bodily fluids that some people might find pretty disgusting as well. But that is all part of the job when you are a nurse. If you can’t handle it, this isn’t the job for you.  Now, there are some nursing jobs where you might not be as exposed to these messy things, so do your research before you give up on nursing as a career choice.

It Takes Dedication

Nursing is also the kind of job that takes quite a bit of dedication and commitment. You are going to be doing difficult work and you will certainly be challenged at times. That’s all part of the job and part of what you should expect if you want to become a nurse. If you are not dedicated to the work, you will struggle to push on through the tough times when the work starts to get really challenging. That’s not what you want, so be sure you’re in it for the good times and the bad.

The Hours Can be Unsociable

Many jobs have unsociable hours and hours they can change quite regularly. Nursing is certainly one of those jobs. The hours can be difficult but that’s what you should expect. After all, people need to be taken care of 7 days a week and 24 hours a day. You should be prepared to work unsociable hours at least occasionally if you want to work as a professional nurse. It’s not ideal but it’s what the job demands.  If you really need regular working hours, say during your children’s younger years, then working in an outpatient surgery office might be a good fit for you.

Learning Continually

When you’re a nurse, your learning does not end when you graduate or complete your training. It’s something that will be ongoing. There’s always more for you to learn and understand, not to mention that new protocols and techniques are always being developed. By always looking for ways to find out more and gain new skills, you will become a better nurse and rise through the ranks much more quickly too.

Physically Demanding

Working in the nursing field is physically demanding.  Besides the long and non-conventional hours, you will be on your feet a good deal of the time.  You may also need to do much lifting and moving during your care of patients.  You will also be more exposed to sick people, increasing your chances of catching the illness.  Besides this direct toll on your body, you need to be careful to eat well and get good sleep.  Be sure to make self-care a priority.

A career in nursing is certainly not for everyone. It’s a challenging and difficult job to do day after day, but it can also be one of the most rewarding jobs you can do as well. If it’s for you, start taking the right steps and gaining the level of training you need in order to make this career a success for you.
