Children are naturally curious. During the warm months, my children get themselves dressed and head outside almost immediately. There are things to build, creatures to watch (or catch), flowers and food to pick – they get out and enjoy God’s creation. This curiosity and desire to explore transfers to science learning very naturally. When we can find resources to work with those interests and explorations it makes it all fun. Recently, my youngest son has been using Learning About Science Collection Level 3 (print) from WriteBonnieRoseWriteBonnieRose. These units not only gives us further information for these experiences but does so from a Creation perspective.
There are three levels to these science collections, each exploring similar topics at an age-appropriate level. You could use this with siblings who are learning at different levels and spend some time learning about the weather or plants together, each with their own books. You could also use these sequentially, beginning with level one and continuing to level two and on through level three. Level three also comes in print or cursive. Even if your child is not writing cursive regularly the exposure in this way is great. Within the collection, we look into seven different topics. The topics covered in level three are:
- What’s Going on Inside Plants?
- Life in the Ocean’s Hidden Zones
- Kinds of Animals and How They Live
- Forecasting and Understanding the Weather
- Exploring the Earth’s Landforms
- Energy and Its Many Forms
- Discovering Rocks, Crystals, and Minerals
Most of these individual studies are 18 pages in length. The exceptions being What’s Going on Inside Plants? at 16 pages, Life in the Ocean’s Hidden Zones at 21 pages, and Energy and Its Many Forms with 26 pages. By adding in additional resources such as relevant library books, videos, and other resources, as recommended in an additional file, this would be a full school year’s worth of material. The unit for each topic has black and white illustrations, begging to be colored. And traceable words associated with each bite-sized bit of information. For those covering animals, the animal’s name is the traceable word. A short paragraph about the entry is often simply enough written that your budding reader can read it himself, at least in part. Proper scientific terms are used, and those words can be long or complicated or both.
We, our 8 year old son and I, have been exploring a few of the topics from the Learning About Science Collection Level 3. By age, he will be a third grader when we resume school this fall. The topics he chose for us are Kinds of Animals and How They Live and Life in the Ocean’s Hidden Zones. With all of the animals we keep and have living wild in our yard, he was able to lay hands, literally, on many examples. We may not have been able to observe a Strawberry Poison Frog, but we do have bright green tree frogs and common toads. After reading a bit about the invertebrates, crayfish and earthworm, we went looking for some. These are normally fairly easy to find in our backyard, but not this summer. We are experiencing a drought and both creatures are buried deep.
We also spent some time learning about the different zones, by depth, of the ocean. This coincided with all things shark. Sharks live in the Sunlight Zone, along with many other familiar types of sea life. The deeper you go, the stranger some of the animals are. Some give off their own light, down deep where it is too far for sunlight to reach. This study begs for a trip to a good aquarium. Getting your eyes on these animals, seeing them with your own two eyes, will make quite an impression on your children. What an amazing Creator we have!
We’re looking forward to using the topics related to rocks, weather, and landforms when we resume school later this fall. Samples of the minerals and minerals and rocks covered as well as some of the weather instruments will add the hands-on components for those studies. With these kinds of additions, you can make this science collection a full, rich look at the world God has created.
