Making the Best of the Basics: Family Preparedness Handbook is packed full of information. This thick volume is useful for someone just beginning to research or those that have lived this lifestyle for years. The author doesn’t spend pages discussing the causes, but rather focuses on the “what” and “how” you can be prepared.
Our family does not view being prepared as a response to fear, but as part of taking care of our family. This is the same view found in Family Preparedness Handbook. With 29 chapters divided into 10 sections covering topics from food storage to energy/fuel storage to medical survival basics. There are recipes, worksheets and planning pages, and numerous links for further research and study.
Making the Best of Basics: Family Preparedness Handbook is the book to have beside you as you begin to make your plans and keep with you even after you are living a life of self-reliance. It is easy to read, nothing should be “over your head”. The contents and indices make it a great reference. I love the section on building a library almost as much as the recipes.
We are spoiled with this gift of the internet. We can Google or search YouTube and find out how to do nearly anything. What about when the power is out? Having books and notes in hand — and experience with the skills will make a big difference. We are striving for this lifestyle change, this book will help us to achieve this goal.
Finding like-minded people to prep and plan with can not only be fun, but fill in any gaps in your skills and knowledge. With the internet, we can find community and share, but nothing beats face-to-face interaction and experiences. If you have the means, find an expo and attend. The Self Reliance Expo is one I would like to attend. I hope they will plan an event near us next year (please!)
