Getting a new home is one of the most exciting moments in a persons’ life. All the hard work has paid off and you finally have one you can call your own. All the saving can stop and you can finally start enjoying the fruits of your labour. When you have finally gotten over the fact you will be waking up in your own home you can start investing some time in making sure everything is in good condition. There are some essential things you should check for in your new home to make sure it’s livable and not dangerous. You might think that this kind of thing should have been ironed out when you got it surveyed or inspected but you’d be surprised about what you might find when you start looking in-depth yourself. These things will give you an idea about what you should be looking at to ensure the home you bought is livable. Best to do it as soon as you can too because issues left will just get worse over time.
They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. You might have had the house inspected when pests, in general, were hibernating or it might just have been the opposite season. Sometimes, surveyors miss things – even the more reputable companies. Start checking the loft and basements. Look right in the corners. Think about things like rat or mouse droppings. Then look for insect nests. Don’t approach them yourself. You’ll need bee removal experts for relevant nests because they might be able to save them. Have a nose around the garden too. You might find some telltale signs there. It isn’t always the end of the world if you find something. A lot of the time you can get rid of things yourself. If you’re living in an area next to fields or woods you are more likely to have some sort of pest about. It’s worth completing a quick scout of your property with pests in mind before anything can get out of hand and end up costing you a fortune.
This can catch a lot of people unaware. If you have a wall facing inclement weather you will need to have a look. The pointing is the cement work in between the bricks. If you have your home rendered or stuccoed you won’t need to worry about this. If you haven’t, then you need to check it out because it could lead to water-damaged walls. It could get into the cavities and possibly cause electrical fires. You will be able to see if there is any existing water damage pretty quickly but check the pointing too because for the sake of a little bit of sealant you might be able to stop a future disaster. It’s good practice to just look over the standard of brickwork in any case, just to make sure everything is as it should be. If you suspect it’s worse than you think then it’s time to get a builder out. At least for an initial assessment. Remember, three is the magic number when it comes to quotes.
The heating system needs to be in good condition. Have a look at it. Is it old? Your inspector should have had a look at this. If you did not get one then now is the time to have a detailed look at what is going on. If you think it might be a little old then it might be time to have it serviced. It is always cheaper to get a service in the summer, so if you can go for it. New boilers are expensive, but if you shop around you might be surprised. Also, a lot offer 0% interest on monthly payments, so if these are more appropriate think about approaching it in that way, it’s not costing anything more. If your boiler isn’t working properly it can cause some serious problems for you and your family, ranging from fire to carbon monoxide poisoning.
Carbon Monoxide Alarm
On the topic of carbon monoxide poisoning, it’s important you have an alarm in any fossil fuel burning room. They save lives yet still thousands of people are affected every year. Some die. They beep when excessive carbon monoxide is in the air and act as a great barrier between you and any potential harm. They are relatively cheap too, so there’s nothing stopping you from protecting your family. Remember to allow proper ventilation of areas where boilers or heaters are to ensure the carbon monoxide alarms can always work to a high standard.
You at least want one on the landing and another in the hall downstairs. You might want a few more depending on how big your home is. These are a must. Don’t skimp on them, they’re so cheap. You can even get them wired in so that you don’t have to think about them for years on end. If there are already some in place left by the old owners, don’t just assume they work. Press the test button and if possible, swap out the batteries for new ones. Some can be overly sensitive, so if you’re buying them new, make sure you do your research. You can get some cheap ones, but make sure they are not cheaply made. They should at least be marked as passing quality and safety standards. Otherwise, they could end up sounding all the time when they don’t need to or worse, not sounding when they should.
Make sure you get good quality home insurance at the earliest opportunity. You should really get it for the day you move into the home. Don’t forget there is a difference between contents insurance and buildings insurance, you will want to get both. Remember to compare and between different companies and what they offer. You could end up with a great deal if you make sure you use your comparison sites. Remember, not one site has access to all of the companies, so you would be better off checking a few just to be sure you’re getting the best deal from the best companies. It’s not all about the money you’re paying, it’s about the customer service they provide too.
