Nurture Your Child’s Natural Talents

There’s no denying that parents want their children to be successful in a variety of ways. The trouble is, many parents unknowingly stifle their children’s natural talents. That’s because most people are led to believe that all children should follow the same learning curriculum.

All children have different talents and learn at their own pace – to say nothing about learning styles. If you’re keen to nurture your child’s natural skills and abilities, this blog post is for you. Here are some valid ways for you, as a parent, to discover and nurture their abilities:

Nurture your child's talents and interests

Observe your child at play

The first thing you need to do is spend some time watching your child play. Does he or she naturally head toward group activities or ones where they play alone? And does your offspring prefer to run around doing lots of physical activity or sit quietly and play?

Observation is an important way to learn more about the talents your child possesses. If you simply dictate to your son or daughter what they can and cannot do at playtime, you’ll never fully find out about their talents.

Schools such as Learn and Play Montessori encourage observing the nature and spontaneity of children. Doing so helps parents and caregivers foster a child’s natural (and perhaps hidden) talents.

Give your child choices

If your child has an interest in music, you might initially assume it’s a good idea to sign him or her up for some piano or guitar lessons. However, is that really a good way of fostering musical talents?

A better idea would be to give your child some choices. For example, you could ask your offspring what it is they like about music. Is it simply listening to it? Or do they have a keen interest in playing a particular instrument? Perhaps dancing to music is more their thing?

It’s vital that you let your child explore what it is they like the most. The worst thing you can do is steer them into doing something they will eventually hate – but still do it because they want to please you.

Compliment their interests

Another way of helping to nurture your child’s talents is to recognize the things that interest them. For instance, you may notice they watch certain types of TV programs. Your child may then draw or paint scenes from those TV programs.

You might then discover that your child enjoys drawing or painting to a particular style, and so you’ve discovered something that greatly interests them. At the same time, you should also compliment them on those interests rather than chastising them for too much TV time.

Final thoughts

It’s no secret that children of all ages are learning things every day. And with each passing day, they develop their skills and talents. As a parent, you should ensure that you’re doing enough to help foster those skills and talents.

Doing so will mean they lead happier, more fulfilling lives as they get older.
