For some of us, this pandemic has been a very scary experience. You may have older grandparents that are literally prisoners in their own homes. They are unable to shop for themselves; they can’t do the normal things they’d do to keep fit and healthy like walking the dog or doing a bit of gardening. Speaking of the latter, many older people haven’t tried to go into their own garden either. Since the novel coronavirus is thought to travel through the air, it is recommended to stay indoors. That means watching your garden turn into a mini jungle. But slowly and surely this lockdown is coming to an end. So how can you help your grandparents fix their overgrown garden?
Formulate a plan
The biggest concerns need to be met first. The tall plants need to be trimmed so they don’t overshadow your flowers and smaller plants. You will also need to assess what kinds of weeds you have and how you could get rid of them. Chances are you will need a good bushcraft knife or machete-like tool to cut through most of the unneeded vegetation. You will also need to buy the best weed killer possible as the roots will have grown incredibly deep in the past 3 months.
The second phase of your plan is to cut and trim any parts of larger vegetation. Trim the branches of trees and shake off any loose leaves. Cut the vines that have tried to take the house hostage and the climbing vines around the tree bark. The main aims are to get as much sunshine onto the garden without overgrown vegetation spoiling it for smaller plants and flowers. You’ll also want enough space between each of them to give them plenty of water and airflow.
The largest task
Unless you know how to wield a scythe you might want to call a lawn mowing service. Thick heavy grass is not easy to cut and will take professional equipment and someone with a bit of experience to do it right. They have specialists who know how to mow your lawn without causing damage to the grass or soil. Since the grass is longer and denser, the roots will be stronger. If you were to mow it yourself, you’d probably uplift the soil and make little potholes that would take weeks or heal. They have people who use the top equipment that cuts effortlessly and they will get rid of the waste so you have a nice clean surface. A well-cut lawn is one of the prime features of a splendid lawn. We do use untreated grass clippings for mulch. You won’t want to do this if the grass has gone to seed. If you don’t compost, or the cuttings are greater than what you can handle, then trust the service to take care of it.
Prune and preen
Many plants and flowers might have been folded and bent under the weight of all the extra vegetation. You can do a little fine trimming at ground level to free the smaller plants. Prune and preen their flower petals and straighten them out so the water you give them is absorbed by the entire structure.
A good sharp bushcraft knife will cut through most things in the garden, even if they’re thicker and longer thanks to the lockdown period. The lawn is the largest task and also the jewel of any yard, so that is often best left to the professionals.
