I’ve been visiting SchoolhouseTeachers.com pretty regularly ever since the site went live. Every time I visit, there is something new. Have you checked out this site yet? This is one site that truly has something for everyone. No matter what your children’s ages, no matter what curriculum you use or subjects you need to cover (but haven’t found a good way to do it), you will find something on this extraordinary site.
I highly recommend taking the tour and checking out the samples before you do anything else. There is so much here it is easy to become overwhelmed without some sort of plan. There are studies by subject that can be done on your own time schedule, there are lessons for daily work in grammar, writing, history and more. The bonuses are amazing as well. These range from encouraging articles and booklists to the awesome, cannot be topped planners.
Some of the daily activities we have used are the writing prompts. It can be a struggle coming up with something new to write about each day. Now I don’t have to! We have also enjoyed the Everyday Easels, This Day in History and Ditch the Desk. My children love the hands-on fun! It is so nice to point. click. teach (or play ;D ). It really is that simple!
Some of the pages under the dailies are actually weekly assignments – which of course you can break down to work on daily or spread out over only a few days of the week. As homeschoolers, we should be masters at tweaking our resources to suit our needs, not being slaves to the curricula.
There are numerous subjects found under the Schoolhouse Teachers heading (17 to be exact). Some of these subjects are for older students (career exploration, economics, math) and others for younger, elementary age learners (reading lessons and lapbooking). My favorites of course are those that are for the whole family to learn together – from your youngest to your oldest. Explore history, home economics, geography, or literature.
The other amazing thing about these lessons is that they come from some of the most well-known names in homeschooling: Kim Kautzer, Diane Waring, Hands of a Child, Malia Russell, Terri Johnson, and Joey Hajda. Okay, that last one, I had not heard of before. I have however heard of (highly praised) his Friendly Chemistry course. That is another one of the beautiful things about utilizing Schoolhouse Teachers, you can check out various curricula via these lessons (Write Shop, Knowledge Quest materials, the aforementioned Friendly Chemistry).
You can get your first month for only $1. After that, when you choose to continue, all of this only costs you $5.95 a month or pay for 12 months at once and save, it’s only $64.26. There really is nothing to lose. If you had a subscription to the TOS print magazine that was extended through this year (or beyond, ahem) then you may already have access and not even know it! Newly announced is that HSLDA members receive a year free. The information on this should be coming to you from HSLDA.
I have not even begun to cover all that is available on the SchoolhouseTeachers.com site. Some of the other reviewers covered other aspects of this great website. There are book lists, encouraging articles, menus and the “bestest” planners on the planet. Soon, the mp3 recordings from the Expo sessions will be available, too. This is one membership that is worth so much more than the dollars you pay, and the content keeps expanding!
