Children’s Bible Hour began as a radio program in the 1940’s. These books are taken directly from the scripts and freshened up a little. Each book has been beautifully illustrated and is about 16 pages in length.
A long-time narrator at CBH, Uncle Charlie, is the voice reading these stories. Just like the stories I listened to as a girl on records, these have a chime to indicate when to turn the page. After each story, both in the book and on the recording, is the question "Have you asked Jesus to be your Savior?". Through three steps–admit, believe, and choose–complete with scripture, your child can be led to salvation. These are presented in a general enough manner to line up with nearly every ‘flavor’ of Christianity. Families will want to add to this according to your own beliefs, but this is an excellent way to broach the subject.
Seasons of Faith is a new series that currently has one title for each season. Spring’s story is Race with Midnight. Becky worries about sharing her faith with her cousin Sarah. As you can tell from the cover, horses are involved. This is the favorite among my older girls (ages 9 & 7). Summer brings us You can’t Come In. This story involves two boys, Adam and Zack. Trying to see the need for God’s forgiveness, the perfect example comes about when Zack comes home from an especially dirty afternoon. Next is autumn with it’s story Seventy Times Seven. Brad learns that he needs to forgive just as he has been forgiven. Braving the Storm is the story for winter, the hardest season. In this story, Thomås learns that having deep roots can make struggles easier. When we have a close relationship with the Lord, we are stronger.
Our family enjoyed both listening to the CDs and reading the books for ourselves. Some of the stories may have been lacking in some details (Just what happened when all of the building supplies went flying through the air? Didn’t they have a hard time finding all of the nails?) or been a situation most children would not find themselves in (Becky with her family). Overall, I liked the examples that these stories showed my children. There are also some discussion questions found on the website http://www.cbhministries.org/seasons_discussion.php.
These books are the first of what I hope to be many more. Just as the radio program is remembered and loved by many, these books will be, too.
