We enjoy a movie as a family nearly every Friday. It’s not often in the theater – we save that expense for a special movie. The upcoming “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is just such a special movie. It will be opening in theaters here in the U.S. in just a few weeks (May 2nd). Our whole family enjoys superhero movies and stories (especially those from Marvel) and Spider-Man is one of the best of the best. We have even been reading reprints of the older comics and watching clips from the animated show of the 1960’s. Yes, we love Spidey!
As much as we enjoy movies, we always try to bring things down from those “pedestals” the superheros can often be placed on. Our lens for all we see and do (especially something that is entertainment) is Scripture. The Family Discussion Guide is a great tool for those conversations. Having looked through the 5 page Discussion Guide for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”, I cannot wait for the conversations with my children – young and old – once we see the movie of course.
The Discussion Guide covers 6 topic areas including power, making your life count and sacrifice. Within each, relevant Scripture is referenced and 2-3 questions are asked. One of the questions asks “Even though you may be young, you have powers of your own. What are they?” I really appreciate how the perspective of the guide is directed to relating to Peter Parker/Spider-Man and not building up “hero worship”. We have one true hero, and this will help to make sure the worship is not mis-directed.
