What to do if you are injured in a supermarket

The supermarket is a chore. Unless you happen to find it fun to wander up and down the aisles only to find the shelves are empty of the things you came for, or worse, that the price of your favorite foods has gone up, you’ll know that the trip to the supermarket is nothing short of tedious. For an hour, you’ll scan down your shopping list and find maybe half of the things you wanted. The rest will have to be made up of near-enough items that will upset the people back at home, who will accuse you of not looking hard enough. This weekly fun awaits us all.

But for all the fuss and all the headache that’s headed our way for picking up the “wrong” shopping, at least the supermarket is well lit and clean and warm and, above all, safe. Right? Well, no. Not always. As it happens, there are many hidden (and some not so hidden) hazards attached to browsing the soups in the canned goods aisle – or browsing anything else in any other aisle, for that matter. Slips, trips, falls, electric shocks, and being struck by poorly stacked items can cause serious injury – find out how to sue Walmart for personal injury by clicking the link.

When this happens, you may be taken by surprise and you may not know what to do – people don’t plan to be injured while going about their everyday tasks. That’s why we’re going to run through what you should do if you are injured in a supermarket.

One of the biggest mistakes made by people involved in accidents that cause personal injury is admitting some kind of fault on their own behalf. This is natural, but wrong, and could land you in murky waters, legally speaking. When we are injured, we blame ourselves for not paying attention. But the duty of care for your safety inside any supermarket lies with the supermarket, not you. Remember not to start apologizing and don’t blame yourself. Do not comment on the accident to the supermarket staff if at all possible before you have spoken to a lawyer.  The lawyer will look into the legalities and help you get the deserving compensation for it. You can learn more about how lawyers can assist in personal injury cases here.

Gather evidence

Any claim for personal injury compensation will be made on the back of supporting evidence. Where possible, take photos of the scene at the time of the injury and ask for the names and contact details of any witnesses. These important steps can help the truth to come out in a court of law – supermarket staff may try to tidy the scene and deny liability in the case of spillages, for example.

Remember, take pictures and speak to a lawyer – these steps are part of the most straightforward way to begin the processes that will follow.  Stay safe.
