Don’t you love that quote on the Beloved Books website? I love reading to my children. We have adventures, laugh, cry and learn — all from our cozy home.
What about when you cannot read aloud? Say you have a cold (coughs and sniffles are not often desirable sound effects). What about the times you are out of the house – a day of errands or a long drive to Grandma’s? Audio books save the day!
We use audio books frequently. My struggling reader enjoys books far above her reading level thanks to audio books. All of the children love listening to great stories.
The Sugar Creek Gang series by Paul Hutchens are definitely great stories. A group of boys living, growing and having adventures in a small town (in Indiana!). Started in 1940, the series is based on the childhood of Mr. Hutchens – a much simpler time compared to the childhoods of many children today. Despite the different times, my children find much to relate to in the stories.
I am especially happy at the strong Christian basis found throughout the series. We have been listening to the first volume. It contains the first 6 stories on 12 CDs ($54.95 plus free media mail). You can find these well-loved audios at Beloved Books. The whole series is on 6 volumes that can be purchased individually or as a set for $279.70 (current sale price).
Each story is approximately 2 hours – a week’s worth of “Listening Lunches” here. We have enjoyed listening chronologically and following the growth of the characters. Seeing some of their family saved has been very encouraging. Of course they get into the adventures, too! I am glad we don’t have any bears or caves nearby. The Sugar Creek Gang has inspired many adventures of their own!
