I have been a fan of resources from Knowledge Quest from the first time I used them. Maps, geography and living history — these are things near and dear to our family’s way of learning. Despite my love for Knowledge Quest resources, I had not used any of the A Child’s Geography series. When I learned of the latest volume (3) coming out, Explore the Classical World, I knew it was time to change that.
Aimed at elementary age learners (grades 1-6), I’ve also been including my 7th grade daughter as well. As we’ve not officially begun our new school year, we’ve been covering about a chapter every two weeks. With 15 chapters, this pace will give us a year’s worth of lessons. We can also pick up the pace and complete this volume in a semester. Given the ages of our children, we’ll keep with the slower pace. There are so many fun activities to pick and choose from — and we want to do most of them.
The extra activities are the expected things like timelines and map work. But that is not all — there is much more! Hands-on activities and recipes utilize our favorite methods of learning. There is a variety of activities from arts & crafts type projects to holding your own Olympics. Thus far, the Olympics has been the most fun. In my opinion, the best way to experience a country is to taste its food. Because we are visiting from afar, good recipes are a must. The included recipes give an authentic taste and are on the easier-to-prepare side (from what we’ve seen). We have been able to find the necessary ingredients down the international aisle of Meijer, though an international market would make a fun field trip, too!
One of my favorite extras is the sort of thing I love about using Christian resources. The file is called Prayer Walk and is a wonderful guide to pray for the peoples of the countries we are studying. A brief background of the religious environment is given along with a few specific prayer requests. A link for up-to-date prayer concerns is included. The necessary pages for these are found on the included CD-ROM when you pick up the physical copy ($34.95) or their own files if you opt for the digital version ($24.95).
