Amazing Animals by Design by Debra Haagen a TOS Crew Review

The latest review through TOS is not just a beautiful book about Intelligent Design.  It is from one of our very own Crew mates, Debra Haagen of Noteable Scraps.  Her very first book has just been released — you may find it in your local bookstore.  You may also order it through the publisher, Tate Publishing in either print ($8.99) or as an e-book ($7.99).  Debra also has an author page with Tate Publishing, a blog and Facebook page.

We received an advanced copy of the book as a download.  I am starting to like this e-book option; it means we can read new books right away.  No stalking waiting patiently for the mailman to deliver the book.  The only handheld device we have is my iPod Touch.  I read books on there, but that screen is awfully tiny and I wanted my children to be able to really see the pictures.  We snuggled around the computer desk instead.

Right off, my 4 year old daughter noticed that the female main character shares her name.  She fell in love right then and there.  While reading it, I noticed the older girls gathering around as well.  Although I only invited my 2, 4 and 6 year old children to read with me, the older girls were intrigued by the story and illustrations as well.

This is written at the perfect level for my little ones.  We try to do as many of our subjects together as possible.  With science, often the little ones don’t really catch much.  Many of the things are over their heads.  Amazing Animals by Design is written right to them.  Their questions are voiced and answered in a way that they understand.  This also makes the level just right for big sisters to read to the younger siblings–which is enjoyed by all.

We have all really enjoyed this story.  So much, we will be purchasing a print copy for our own shelves. Reading on the computer is nice, but we only have one computer and it can be in pretty high demand.  I hope the author has some more books like this in the works.  We’d like to learn more with John and Sarah about the Amazing world God has designed.
