I’ve been a fan of Doorposts products ever since first seeing them. Earlier this summer I was able to finally order their top-selling four chart set on Biblical character. They are hanging in a prime location in our home, right down the doorpost. I have been thinking of purchasing their Beauty and the Pig set for awhile. When I learned that we had the opportunity to review the newly revised version, Beauty in the Heart, I was thrilled!
Ten studies made up of 86 daily lessons take you and/or your daughters through topics from submission to modesty; humility to serving. The study is written to girls 10-12 years old and older. My girls who are studying from this are 9, 10 and 12. I think they could easily do this on their own, but we have enjoyed this time of study together. This has been perfect for where they are. They have been noticing more and more how we dress and behave differently from other girls their age. They have begun asking questions why.
I have loved having this study for them to work through to find these answers for themselves – straight from God’s word. There are even alternate questions so that brothers can participate as well. Not that young men are approaching this for themselves, but how to encourage their sisters and see why these qualities are to be desired for a future spouse.
Modesty is something that is important to me. I don’t just mean this in the sense of we wear long skirts, etc. but I know the heart is the at the root. My 3rd daughter has been pushing at these boundaries in the past few months. Since beginning this study, I can tell a difference in her attitude and understanding. Where before she only saw a rule to be tested, she is now seeing the Scriptural basis for our thoughts.
That is not my biggest reason for being such a fan of this study though. While the topic of Beauty in the Heart is a great one, I am most thrilled with the how my girls are learning this. I was not raised in a strongly Christian home. Until relatively recent adulthood, I had not done any Bible study before. I’ve read Scripture and occasionally a devotional or study aimed at women, but I have not used any of the common Bible study aids. I didn’t know how.
Through the studies in Beauty in the Heart, I am learning alongside my girls all about inductive study, topical study, character study and more. We are learning about — and using — a concordance and a topical Bible. I am beyond thrilled that we are learning tools that will used over and over the rest of our lives. Not only are we learning so much, every one of us looks forward to our time for study (even that boundary pushing 9 year old).
Even if you think your daughters don’t need a study on modesty, you will want this study. Learning how to study God’s word is necessary regardless of the topic. Beauty in the Heart is available in both paperback ($14.00) and e-book/pdf versions ($10.00). Use the code beautystudy when you order the paperback to receive the pdf free (only through August 31).
Doorposts began in 1990 with the simple mission to provide “Bible-based, parent-designed, family-tested products to help you apply Scripture in your home.” From what we’ve seen, they do this and do it well. Other Schoolhouse Review Crew families received Because You Are Strong, a study of Godly Strength for Young Men. Be sure to check out all the reviews by clicking this graphic.
Thank you Doorposts!
