The first day of school is usually a special day. I remember this day being one of great anticipation. Butterflies in my stomach meant both excitement and nervousness. I hope to make the day a special one for my children, too. We haven’t begun yet (and won’t until the Monday after Labor Day) but I have some plans.
We always start our first day with a special breakfast. In our family, this almost always means cinnamon rolls — a family tradition for special days (or to make a day special). You can find our “secret family recipe” in this post. They sure smell good when they’re baking. Don’t forget the cream cheese frosting! They aren’t diet friendly, but it is a special day.
Those bargains and steals we’ve been picking up during this back to school shopping season? They were carefully set aside, waiting for this day. New folders and notebooks are chosen and labelled. New dividers added to our binders. New covers created for our binders, too! Mmm the lovely scent of crayons and Sharpies. . .
I try to get pictures of my learners on this day, too. Some years are better than others – it seems like there is always a grump in the bunch. Some years, this tradition may not happen until the 3rd or 4th day. When you don’t have that momentous event of leaving, it seems easier to forget (at least that’s my story).
I’m adding something new this year, too! I think our first day will be the perfect day for a field trip. We try to get to the local apple orchard every fall, and I think the first day of school is the perfect day — apple(s) for the teacher and all of that. Apple cider slushes, too! I think this will be a great new tradition!
