Blogging through the Permaculture Alphabet
Blogging through the Permaculture Alphabet is a series I will be adding to over the next 26 weeks or so. I will be sharing about the topic of permaculture, as it relates to that week’s letter of the alphabet. Permaculture is related to homesteading, but it takes things a bit further. It can be more encompassing than what we think of that falls under homesteading. It is more mindful and purposeful – with an eye on sustainability. There are aspects to modern permaculture that we don’t necessarily practice; areas that are more spiritual and in opposition to Scripture. I won’t be dwelling on those things, you may not even notice their absence with all I have to share. It should be a fun challenge!
Sustainable and Self-sufficient
Before we jump into posts next week (January 17th), you may want to know what permaculture is. According to the Oxford Dictionary, permaculture is “the development of agricultural ecosystems intended to be sustainable and self-sufficient.” Though growing in popularity the last few decades, it is a system that has been in use for centuries. The practices that make up permaculture have been around since the beginning, even if they may not have always been called permaculture.
- Permaculture is an idea that combines permanence with agriculture, not a rigid set of rules that are adhered to.
- Permaculture is not abusing the land so that it will only produce crops when chemicals are sprayed over the ground.
- Permaculture is not confined feeding of livestock.
- Permaculture is the stewardship that God called Adam to in the Garden of Eden.
- Permaculture, at its beginning is from The Beginning.
Through the following weeks and months, I hope you will come to see permaculture as important and God-honoring as I do. See you next Tuesday!

I look forward to reading your alphabet posts. I could use some encouragement to get back to my garden and give it some love. The past three summers have been rough, and there is much to do out there!
