Mother’s Day is one of those holidays I have always thought was invented by the companies selling cards and candy. After going through this study from TOS and Amanda Bennett, I have learned I was wrong. Mother’s Day may have only been an official holiday in these United States for 96 years, but a day for celebrating mothers has been around in one form or another since the times of the early Greeks. Another thing I learned, the woman who pushed for Mother’s Day to be an official holiday would probably be as turned off by the commercial aspect of it as I am.
Now, before you start thinking this unit study is all about me, well….. You know what I mean. This really is a lot of fun and learning for my children. They had fun hearing about the ways mothers are honored in other countries. We learned a few ways to say ‘mother’ in other languages as well. And we learned about some special mothers in the Bible.
As with other Download N Go studies, my children were completing components for a lapbook. What makes this one even more special? It will be an unique card for Mother’s Day. While I wish they had an older sibling or friend to help them complete the mini books and notebook pages, I will try not to think of the mess from paint and glue and just enjoy the completed project. There are options for younger and older children with differing amounts of writing required. My children are always asking how to spell everything and they usually like to use big words. An older child could do this on their own especially when they are motivated by wanting to surprise their mama.
The things I look forward to in a Download N Go study are all here. Vocabulary words, additional reading, something from the Bible, and different countries are covered each day. My favorite feature of each study is the recipes. This unit is no different, with all of the yummy possibilities for spoiling mom. What was new for us is the special Download N Go link for videos. Our previous DNG studies had us viewing things on YouTube’s site directly. We have never had any problems with inappropriate content on any part of these pages. Still, I was thrilled to see this different environment for my children to enjoying watching these clips in. Especially in this particular unit where I want to be as hands off as possible, this feature makes it even easier to ‘download and go’.
