Peek at Our Week: First Day of Homeschool 2013

Though we are year-round schoolers, we do make a special day of our first day. We had cinnamon rolls for breakfast. Any excuse, right? We opened our new school supplies — finally. The various packages and bags have been taunting some of us for weeks now. Then, I broke out the camera and the pages I had printed to get some pictures. Not everyone was enthusiastic, but it wasn’t all bad.

We did do a bit of math and everyone that reads read something.  It was a school day after all.  We had our regular Monday lunch – with a twist.  We normally have quesadillas, but today we had pizza-dillas. I had picked up some flat-breads from the bakery mark-down cart a week or so ago and stashed them in the freezer.  A little smear of some homemade pizza sauce and everyone topped how they wanted.  Pineapple and black olive is the most popular combination here.  I sprinkled on some cheese, heated a bit for maximum meltiness, then we ate.  Yum!

The rest of the day was spent outdoors with art supplies!  The neighbor children were home from school by now, so they joined in and created, too.  I’ll share about our nature prints in a later post.

The rest of the week passed in a bit of a blur.  We had friends over for the day on Tuesday (no school happening then).  We finally made it to the apple orchard on Friday.  The place was packed!  It was also hot.  We decided to forego our usual adventures for a later day.  We grabbed a bag of already picked apples (HoneyCrisp, please!), some cider slushies and called it good-for-now.  We’ll be back!

All-in-all not a bad first week.  I’m not so worried about where we are in our various curricula as I am re-establishing those important routines and rhythms to the day.  Our whole summer has been quite off — and I’ve not worked at correcting it nearly enough.  We first tackle mealtimes.  Sometimes lunch has been as late as 3:00.  When we aren’t trying to get to bed “on time” or up early the next morning, it is easy to let these things slide.  We ate when we were hungry.  Once we get these times more set, the rest of the day *should* flow from then.  I hope!

This has been a Peek at Our Week.  What’s been happening in your corner of the world?
