Our family has enjoyed some of the movies and TV shows portraying favorite characters from the comics of our childhood (well, mine and my husband’s childhood). As we are watching with our children, we feel the need to redirect, to point to Scripture and Jesus and real-life superheroes. When I learned of The Captain Sun Adventures and the great way in which they use superhero comics to do just that, I knew my children would want to read them. We received Rescue Me! What Superheroes Can Teach Us About the Power of Faith which is Book #1 in the adventures written by Bryce Morgan and illustrated by Mitch Martin.

Both of our sons and our eldest daughter currently read comic books and/or graphic novels. The heavy illustrations and good vs evil themes are a favorite. The often shorter text appeal to their reading abilities, too. As soon as our book arrived, our eldest son disappeared with it. Later that afternoon I asked how he was doing with it. He had finished it! He filled me in on the overall gist of the story (after I stopped him from trying to tell me every.little.painstaking.detail — maybe we need to review what a summary is?). Then he let me actually look at the book myself.
There are eight chapters covering things from origin stories and bad guys to secret identities and super powers. And of course, as the title implies, a rescue. At the end of each chapter, the front page of the Capital City Chronicle covers the story and offers questions and scripture references to help us see the story through a Scriptural worldview. At the end of the book there is a page to guide the parent in discussions. There are questions for each chapter as well as for the lesson page (which is the front page news).

After feeling quite accomplished in reading this all-by-himself, our son then set about reading it to his younger siblings as well. What about our teen daughter that loves comics? Even though she indicated it was written for younger children, she couldn’t resist the awesome graphics and excitement shared by her siblings. She also read it “by-herself” and admitted she quite enjoyed it, too.
Whether your superhero fans are young or old, these adventures will be enjoyed. We especially enjoyed the repeated and consistent pointing us back to God throughout the pages.
